DISCUSS ALL-IRELAND GREEN ECONOMY WITH GORMLEY
23-10-09
SDLP
MLAs Dolores Kelly and Alban Maginness met John Gormley, Minister
for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government at Leinster
House in Dublin on Friday to discuss all-island green issues.
Dolores Kelly
chairs the Assembly Environment Committee while Alban Maginness
chairs the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee. They were
accompanied by Cllr Matthew McDermott, chair of SDLP Youth.
Alban
Maginness said they talked about a joint north-south waste management
strategy and climate change and urged that they be included in
the agenda of the North South Ministerial Council meetings.
He
said: “We talked about the need for an all-Ireland renewable
energy strategy and the potential for Ireland to be a net exporter
in the new green economy.”
Dolores
Kelly also raised the red tape which is holding up INTERREG IV
projects for co-operation on providing jobs, the east-west cross-border
rail link and dealing with climate change in border areas. She
urged the minister to do what he could to expedite approvals for
projects which had been ready to go for two years now.
Cllr
McDermott told the Minister about the work SDLP Youth has done
campaigning for the roadmap for the Copenhagen climate conference
in December. “Climate change is by far the biggest issue
facing my generation and we need action fast,” he said.
He also urged the Minister to work to have climate change included
on the agenda of the North South Ministerial council.
