MAGINNESS URGES VIGILANCE AFTER DOOR SCAM

North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness has urged people, particularly
the elderly, to be vigilant after a woman had her handbag stolen
by conmen callers dressed as Water Service employees at her Glanlean
Drive home.
He said: “People
should always be suspicious of people calling to their doors.
It’s the only way they can fully protect themselves. Genuine
callers will not be offended by this as all law-abiding citizens
realise the fear elderly people have about callers.
“Unfortunately,
the good nature of many elderly people is invariably their undoing.
“Always
ask for identification and if still not satisfied about the caller,
refuse entry. Bodies such as the Water Service will understand
if their employees are questioned thoroughly.
“If
you are in any way suspicious after someone has left then contact
the police. These people have to be stopped before they attempt
the same thing again and I urge neighbours to also be vigilant
and keep and eye on elderly people’s homes in the area.”
