MAGINNESS: SOCIETY MUST HELP PREVENT SCHOOL ARSON ATTACKS
20.07.09
SDLP Justice
spokesperson Alban Maginness has called for society as a whole
to help bring an end to arson attacks on schools.
He said: “There
have been four arson attacks on schools in a week not to mention
attacks on orange halls. I would urge anybody with information
regarding the perpetrators to hand them over to the police and
help in any way they can.
“Doing
nothing in this regard is aiding and abetting direct attacks on
the community. Schools are not non-sectarian and should be allowed
to complete their duties unhindered.
“An
attack on a school is a direct attack on us all. This is where
our children learn the qualities in life which will stay with
them for life. Thankfully nobody has been injured in these attacks,
however, this does not dilute the seriousness of burning a school
to the ground, or daubing sectarian graffiti on its walls.
“Hopefully,
people will take a stand and say ‘enough is enough’.
It’s never acceptable to accommodate somebody who has broken
the law. If these attacks are allowed to continue then it’s
on society’s conscience that we didn’t do enough to
stop it.”
