MAGINNESS CALLS FOR ISRAEL TO RELEASE MAGUIRE

Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness MLA said the continued detention
of peace campaigner Mairead Maguire is a further stain on Israel’s
reputation and she should be released immediately and unconditionally.
He said: “Mairead
Maguire and the other occupants on the boat carrying essential
humanitarian aid to Gaza were illegally seized in international
waters. Concerns about Israel’s security are a shameful
pretext. It is precisely because Israel has closed off proper
import channels which it controls that this shipment was necessary.
“Claims
that the aid will be passed on to Gaza after inspection ring hollow.
It has been pointed out that children’s toys will be rejected
as unnecessary luxuries and cement to rebuild bombed homes will
be rejected as potential military goods.
“Ireland
and the whole EU must make its views of Mairead Maguire’s
detention and proposed deportation known in no uncertain terms.
According to the Red Cross 80% of the people in Gaza are dependent
on external food aid. By its blockade Israel is visiting mass
punishment upon a whole community and no security concerns, no
actions by Hamas can justify this.”
