MAGINNESS: LOYALIST DECOMMISSIONING LONG OVERDUE

SDLP
Justice spokesperson Alban Maginness said reports that the UVF
has undertaken a significant act of decommissioning are welcome
if they can be verified.
He said: “Obviously
it is good if weapons have been done away with under the supervision
of the body charged with decommissioning. But circumstances have
changed greatly since General de Chastelaine first undertook his
role. We now have a settled system of devolved government in which
there is no place for paramilitary bodies with or without weapons.
The loyalist groups have sorely tried our patience for long enough
and there should be no element of bargaining in completing decommissioning.
The loyalist communities have needs but these must be met as of
right, not by way of negotiation with active or retired brigadiers.
“Time
has run out. All the loyalist groups must give up their weapons
and go out of business without further delay.”
