MAGINNESS - SDLP INCREASED AND CONSOLIDATED VOTE
09.06.2009
SDLP European
Election candidate Alban Maginness has said his party’s
increased vote in the European Election is proof the SDLP has
a bright future in upcoming elections.
He said: “I’m
delighted that the SDLP has increased its percentage share of
the vote from 15.9 per cent in 2004 and 15.2 per cent in the Assembly
elections of 2007 to a total of 16.2 per cent this time around.
“This
is down to the hard work and long hours put in by my party colleagues
and campaign team. I’m heartened by the SDLP’s performance
which has consolidated our position and shows clear signs of hope
for the future.
“Naturally,
I’m disappointed not to have won a seat, not just for myself
but for the people of the north. Furthermore, I’m deeply
disappointed that more than 52 per cent of the electorate chose
not to cast a vote in this election.
“It’s
important that people use their vote if they want to effect real
change and the SDLP is confident that we can redouble our efforts
and engage with the electorate once again.”
