MAGINNESS: PSNI ON TRACK TO MEET PATTEN RECRUITMENT TARGET
01.04.2009
SDLP
Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness said the latest figures on
the composition of the PSNI present the greatest vindication yet
of the 50;50 recruitment policy which was at the very heart of
the Patten reforms.
He
said: “With two years left to achieve the Patten target
of 30 percent Catholic participation, the current proportion of
Catholic officers stands at 26.14 percent. This will be one more
achievement to celebrate at the tenth anniversary of Patten later
this year.
“It
must now be recognised by all that 50:50 recruitment was a key
element not only in the new beginning of policing, but in the
total transformation of our society and politics. With more than
a quarter of the PSNI coming from the nationalist community, the
overblown claims of the dissident groups ring hollow. A balanced,
accountable police service operating to the highest standards
of human rights with the backing of the whole community, is the
best bulwark against the terrorist agenda and the best guarantee
that they will be brought to book.”
