MAGINNESS WELCOMES CARDINAL'S COMMENTS ON DISSIDENTS
17-11-08
Responding
to Cardinal Sean Brady’s comments on the threat posed by
dissident republican groups, SDLP Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness
MLA stated:
“The
cardinal’s comments are timely and welcome. He is of course,
correct when he says that the failure of the Executive to meet
since June has created uncertainty that is affecting the lives
and livelihoods of people across the North, and is also giving
oxygen to dissident groups and others who wish to drag us back
to the darkest days of our past.
The SDLP is
clear that the Devolution of policing and justice is the best
way to combat and isolate the threat posed by dissident groups,
and the SDLP wants it to happen now. It is right and proper that
our legislative assembly should be responsible for criminal law
and help fend off the threat of dissident violence.
Devolution
of Policing and Justice would also be the best way of marshalling
the full mandate of all the parties in the Assembly against the
continued threat from dissident republican groups. That is another
pressing reason to unite to secure the further devolution of justice
and policing alongside our other democratic responsibilities.
The more any party delays this, the more that party plays into
the hands of these illegal and all too active groups.”
