MAGINNESS 'DETASHED' IN AID OF CHILDREN IN NEED
13-11-08

Today, after 37 years of upper lip warming, North Belfast SDLP MLA Alban Maginness finally said goodbye to one of his oldest and dearest friends. After much persuasion Alban agreed to have his moustache shaved off in aid of Children in Need. The deed took place in David’s Barber shop on the Antrim Road this morning and speaking afterwards a more folically challenged Alban said:

“This week I have gone through almost the entire gambit of human emotions – fear, trepidation, uncertainty, night sweats - but I felt that the time was right for a clean break as politician and public figure. This morning I was placed in a chair and had a black cloak slung around my neck - the unmistakable sound of a blade being sharpened in the background did little to allay my fears, the fact that I had the entire musical score of Sweeney Todd in my head all morning did not help either.

The entire shaving experience literally involved a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and that was just me – I can testify that removing 37 years of growth is painful both emotionally and physically!

However, I can say that I now feel like a new man. It's a bit of a liberation almost, and we should not forget that it was all for a good cause. I am quickly closing in on my target of raising £1000 for Children in Need and I hope that my small gesture will play a small part in raising a record amount at this year’s event. Children in Need deserves all our support and particularly in these times of financial constraint, any donation, no matter how small, can make all the difference. I would also like to congratulate the many thousands of people across the North who are partaking in fundraising events for Children in Need. I only hope that their experience is less painful that mine was!"
