SDLP OPPOSED TO INTRODUCTION OF TASER
02-10-08
Commenting
after the Policing Board today agreed to support the introduction
of TASER by the PSNI by a majority vote, SDLP Justice Spokesperson
Alban Maginness MLA stated:
“The
SDLP believes that the introduction of TASER to the PSNI raises
issues around domestic and international human rights obligations.
These include articles two and three of the European Convention
on Human Rights. These articles guarantee the right to life and
the freedom from torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
“The
SDLP today reiterates our opposition to the introduction of TASERs
– even for the limited purposes that the PSNI wants them.
The fact is that these weapons have killed a number of people
in the US and Canada. There is also a dearth of proper research
about their safety – especially their effects on children.
Evidence
also shows that TASERS are actually used in most circumstances
against the most vulnerable people in our society. This cannot
be right or fair.
The
SDLP will continue to oppose TASERS. We do not believe that the
TASER represents the ‘less lethal’ option, as portrayed
by the PSNI. We will work to ensure that only the highest standards
of human rights and equality are touchstones of the police service
in the North.”
