MAGINNESS WELCOMES ASSEMBLY SUPPORT ON TORNEY CASE
22-09-08
Speaking
after the Assembly unanimously passed an SDLP motion calling for
a review into the conviction of John Torney, who was found guilty
of the murders of his wife and two children in 1994. Mr Torney
subsequently died in prison. Speaking after the Assembly debate
Mr Maginness stated:
“This
is a most tragic case and I am delighted that all parties in the
Assembly supported the SDLP motion for a review of John Torney’s
conviction. It is important that the family’s campaign for
justice retains support and momentum. Today’s debate can
act as a further catalyst in that regard.
There
is a real concern that vital evidence was not disclosed at John
Torney’s original trial. The Criminal Cases Review Committee
has still to investigate all aspects of this new evidence despite
being ordered to do so by the courts in June 2005. It must now
review and examine this evidence as a matter of urgency.
This
is a case worthy of serious further investigation by those in
authority. Clearly there are a number of issues which need to
be cleared up but there is sufficient doubt created in this case
which would bring one to the conclusion that it should be reopened
and subsequently referred back to the Court of Appeal. I know
that the family will continue to fight for this outcome and it
is heartening for them to know that they have the support of all
political parties in achieving their goal.”
