MAGINNESS WELCOMES CRACKDOWN ON BURGLARY CRIMES
05-09-08
SDLP
Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness MLA has welcomed the PSNI
crackdown on burglary and other serious crimes as part of Operation
Heartbreak.
Mr Maginess
stated, “This is a tougher approach by the PSNI and I think
it should be welcomed. Of course it does not mean that the people
‘wanted’ are guilty but what it does mean is that
the police want these people to interview them.
“I don’t
think the PSNI would describe this as a naming and shaming exercise
however there is a danger that these people would be seen as guilty
before trial but I think the PSNI are being very careful in saying
that they just want to interview these people. This is not a situation
where they are saying ‘these people are guilty of something
therefore they should be apprehended’. Instead they are
saying ‘we are interested in talking to these people, if
you see them please pass on that information to us’.
“There’s
a very successful programme on the BBC called Crimewatch. This
is the same sort of thing only on a reduced scale but nonetheless
for our community, a small community it is a very useful exercise.”
