MAGINNESS - DECOMMISSIONING IS NOT A CHOICE
22-05-08
SDLP
Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness MLA has responded to comments
made by Secretary of State Shaun Woodward today in relation to
de-commissioning by paramilitary groups. Mr Maginness stated:
“One
of the fundamental tests of moving towards a fully normalised
society is the removal of the last vestiges of paramilitary control
over our communities. The fact that some paramilitary groups are
yet to even begin the process of decommissioning shows how far
we still have to travel.
The
Secretary of State is correct to point out that the IMC and the
mechanism it provides cannot last forever, but he needs to understand
that he needs to work harder on putting pressure on paramilitary
groups, particularly loyalist groups. They need to understand
that decommissioning is something which they have no choice on
and something that they cannot simply put on the long finger.
If they are unwilling undertake the process then they should be
put out of business. They cannot continue to hold their own communities
to ransom.
It
is also clear that the devolution of Policing and Justice powers
to the Assembly could be a crucial part of ending the anomaly
of armed groups coexisting with an increasingly stable society.
This is something that all political parties should redouble their
efforts to achieve.”
