MAGINNESS WELCOMES SMUGGLED CIGARETTES SEIZURE SDLP Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness MLA has welcomed the seizure of over eight million cigarettes with an estimated value of £2.4 million at Belfast docks. Mr Maginness stated: “Tobacco and fuel smuggling are major criminal enterprises in the North. They help fund a growing and sophisticated criminal underworld and line the pockets of a few at the expense of many. That is why this operation is to be welcomed. Crime
knows no borders, justice agencies, North and South, should work
together and with increasing cooperation to tackle these criminals.
It is important that all the agencies involved in tracking and
intercepting these smuggling operations continue to work at all
levels to ensure that there are no loopholes or places to hide
for those involved in this illegal and damaging activity.”
