MAGINNESS - VALUES OF MARTIN LUTHER KING LIVE ON
04-04-08
On the 40th
anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King SDLP Justice
Spokesperson Alban Maginness has said that we all must work to
achieve and secure the goals of civil rights for all citizens.
Mr
Maginness stated:
“As
we recall the 40th anniversary Martin Luther King’s death
today, we should also reflect on how 2008 is the 40th anniversary
of the civil rights struggle in the north. We should use this
anniversary to critically and honestly assess how much this struggle
has achieved and how much work we still need to do.
The principles
which Martin Luther King lived and died for are as prevalent today
as they were then. As he inspired a generation to question and
challenge inequality, so must we. In recalling our own civil rights
struggle we must inspire a new generation of activism. We must
refocus all our efforts on achieving the goals and aspirations
of the civil rights movements. We all should all strive to see
the promised land of equality, parity of esteem and equal opportunity
for all. These were the goals that Martin Luther King stood for
in 1968. These should be the goals that we all strive to uphold
and secure in 2008.”
