MAGINNESS - ATTACKS ON ESSENTIAL SERVICES WORKERS HORRIFIC
AND POINTLESS
13-11-07
SDLP North
Belfast MLA Alban Maginness has responded to research published
today by Queens University which reveals that stone throwing attacks
on essential services workers are increasing. The research also
shows that one in five attacks on emergency services occur in
North and West Belfast. Mr Maginness stated:
“The
numbers of attacks of on essential services throughout the north
of Ireland are as horrific as they are pointless.
It is difficult
to comprehend what goes on in the minds of those who are prepared
to launch senseless attacks on emergency workers and essential
service employees as they go about their business.
Dedicated
frontline staff who are often dealing with life or death emergencies
should be free to carry out their jobs free from assault, obstruction
or hindrance.
Attacks on
these workers are unacceptable and should not be tolerated. They
only serve to damage communities and fracture vital links between
the emergency services and those communities’ at the most
critical times.
“The
longer this situation continues the greater the likelihood that
a life will be lost and we must adopt a zero-tolerance approach
to this kind of despicable behaviour. A sense of responsibility
must be encouraged by parents, schools and the wider community
to educate our young people in particular about the dangers that
exist and the responsibilities they have to their own communities.
Only by adopting this kind of approach can we hope to make meaningful
process on this worrying and growing problem.”
