MAGINNESS WELCOMES MOVES TO REOPEN SHOOT TO KILL INVESTIGATION
Friday 20th July 2007
Commenting on the news that an inquiry into security forces shoot
to kill policy during the troubles SDLP Justice Spokesperson Alban
Maginness MLA stated:
“This
decision is to be welcomed. Clearly the Stalker inquiry was left
in an inconclusive manner. That was unsatisfactory and left many
questions unanswered. As we continue the process of transformation
form conflict to a normal stable society all aspects of our past
must be brought out into the open. There can be no room for doubt
or avoidance of the issues. A fresh look at the shoot to kill
policy and its consequences is a step in the right direction.
Governments and state agencies are bound by law to protect the
lives of people living in their jurisdictions. Violations of human
rights cannot be accepted in any circumstances and I hope that
the Ombudsman will be allowed to carry out a thorough and complete
investigation.”
