MAGINNESS
WELCOMES PRIVATE SECURITY REGULATIONS
SDLP Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness MLA has welcomed the
Government’s decision to extend the regulatory remit of
the Security Industry Authority – regulating private security
firms - to the North. Speaking today Mr Maginness stated:
“This is a welcome announcement and one that the SDLP has
long called for. Making sure that the highest standards apply
not only protects the general public but they also protect the
livelihood of legally licensed firms. Better regulation and proper
vetting facilities are crucial to the proper functioning of this
sector. Today’s announcement should be good news for the
industry and legitimate businesses will have nothing to fear from
it. No one will argue against removing paramilitary involvement
from this and all aspects of our society. The door needs to be
slammed shut on their opportunities to extort money from businesses
and the public. The SDLP’s message is clear - they must
go out of business or be put out of business. Today’s announcement
is an important step in helping to do this.”
