IN TALKS WITH ENVIRONMENT MINISTER ROCHE IN BELFAST CITY HALL
Irish Environment Minister will meet SDLP representatives at Belfast
City Hall today at 5:00PM. There will be a brief photo opportunity.
SDLP Environment Spokesperson Tommy Gallagher welcomed the emphasis
on renewable energy in the Irish government’s energy Green
Paper published yesterday. He said:
“Today’s visit will be welcomed by all those who are
interested and concerned about the many serious threats that modern
lifestyles pose for our environment. It illustrates that solutions
have to be found by both parts of this small island with a shared
environment working more closely together. The environment doesn’t
recognise borders and neither does pollution. We have tremendous
opportunities in wind, wave and other renewable energy forms,
but all such projects can be done more economically and rationally
on an all-Ireland basis.
“The vast majority on this island want it to remain nuclear-free,
and we will tell the minister he can be sure of SDLP support for
the government’s anti-nuclear stance.”
Alban Maginness MLA and SDLP Belfast councillors will also attend.
MAGINNESS
FACELIFT PACKAGE ‘ONLY A STARTER’
SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness welcomed the announcement
of a facelift package covering main routes in West Belfast and
Crumlin Road.
He said: “These areas have suffered dreadfully from a combination
of Troubles-related decline, general deprivation and urban blight.
The political and community will now exists to lift them up, and
even a limited clean-up and facelift can help mobilise the community
to seek further improvement.
“I hope that this is the first small instalment of a peace
dividend which can generate real economic growth and improve quality
of life in some of the worst areas in the north.”
