MAGINNESS:
TORNEY FAMILY DESERVE JUSTICE
There never was enough evidence to convict John Torney of the
1994 murder of his wife and two children and hopefully the meeting
by the Torney family with the Police Ombudsman will mark the beginning
of the end of a terrible ordeal for them, SDLP Justice spokesman
Alban Maginness has stated.
Speaking
ahead of the meeting with the Police Ombudsman due to take place
on Wednesday at her offices, Mr Maginness stated:
“There
never was enough evidence to convict John Torney Senior. And since
then so much has come to light which makes his conviction look
even more doubtful.
“The
SDLP has written to the Criminal Cases Review Commission about
this case and also to the Police Ombudsman because we believe
that a serious miscarriage of justice has occurred.
“Unfortunately,
to date the Criminal Cases Review Commission has dragged its heels
- and has even tried to avoid complying with a court order to
re-examine key aspects of the case against John Torney.
“As
for the police, the RUC investigation seems to have been flawed.
And there is even some disturbing evidence of police wrongdoing.
“The SDLP is pleased that Nuala O’Loan has agreed
to look at this case again - and also that she is meeting with
the Torney family and their supporters. Hopefully, this will mark
the beginning of the end of a horrific ordeal for John Torney’s
family.”
